Leptospirosis: protecting exposed employees
Leptospirosis is a bacterial infectious disease transmitted through contact with water or soil contaminated by animal urine, particularly rodents. It constitutes a occupational risk for certain activities that regularly expose people to wet or contaminated environments.
While the disease is often mild, it can progress to serious forms (kidney, liver, respiratory damage), responsible for prolonged work stoppages, after-effects and sometimes death.
Prevention is based on:
- theoccupational risk assessment,
- the implementation of collective and individual protection measures,
- theemployee information,
- and, in certain situations, the vaccination.
In France, a leptospirosis vaccine is available. It can be offered on a case-by-case basis to employees professionally exposed, after individual evaluation by the occupational physician.
Vaccination aims to reduce the risk of severe forms, in addition to other preventive measures.
