On the occasion of vaccination week, and at the initiative of the Pasteur Institute, near 300 personalities are mobilizing to affirm the importance of vaccination and call for a collective response to disinformation and attacks against science and rationality. These women and men come from the sectors of Scientific Research, Medicine, Culture and the media, politics (including many health ministers) and major foundations and companies in the health, welfare and insurance sectors.

Read below the opinion piece published in Le Parisien on April 26, 2026, during World Immunization Week.
Every eight seconds
Eight seconds.
The time it takes to take a deep breath. That's the time it takes, somewhere in the world, for a vaccine to be administered and for a vaccine to save a life.
In 1796, Edward Jenner administered the first smallpox vaccination. In 1885, Louis Pasteur saved young Joseph Meister from rabies. Since then, humanity has continually refined this practice, and some today would like to call it into question.
Four hundred and fifty per hour. Eleven thousand per day. Nearly four million per year.1 : that is the number of lives saved by vaccination, which is almost double the population of Paris each year.
Who remembers polio? The beaches closed in summer, the swimming pools emptied, the wards filled with patients on iron lungs, the mothers scrutinizing their child's every misstep as if it foreshadowed disaster. Who remembers smallpox, the ravaged faces, the decimated villages, the three hundred million deaths during the twentieth century? In France, who remembers diphtheria, then called "croup," which suffocated infants in their cradles?
No one else. Because vaccination has done its job. And the hallmark of a job well done is that it becomes invisible. Over the past 50 years, vaccination has reduced infant mortality worldwide by 40%, making it one of the most powerful factors in a child's survival.2. According to WHO, at least 1,4 million lives were saved in Europe thanks to safe and effective Covid-19 vaccines. And tomorrow, the human papillomavirus vaccine opens the historic prospect of eliminating cervical cancer, one of the leading causes of cancer death among women worldwide.
One hundred and fifty-four million lives saved in fifty years3These results are the fruit of decades of basic research and clinical investigations, considerable public investment, and unprecedented international cooperation. They represent one of the most valuable achievements of modern medicine and one of the most significant successes in public health.
Because the silence surrounding defeated diseases is a trap. We have forgotten their devastating effects. This is the ungrateful privilege of silent victories.
Into this silence, other voices have rushed in. Voices that do not speak in the name of science, but in the name of ideologies that manipulate fears. Voices that, for the first time in modern history, emanate from some of the most influential centers of power on the planet.
We are witnessing, stunned, a phenomenon we would have thought impossible: the questioning of what science has most firmly established. Childhood vaccination programs that protected millions of children are being abandoned. The allegation of a link between vaccination and autism, refuted repeatedly, rigorously, and unambiguously by the entire international scientific community, is being presented to the public as a credible hypothesis.
This risk is not theoretical. Measles is experiencing a resurgence in several regions of the world due to a decline in vaccination coverage in recent years. Invasive meningococcal infections are rebounding. The risk of resurgence is now real and documented.
Diseases we thought were under control are striking again. Antibiotic resistance will lead to tragedies.
We, the signatories of this open letter, are researchers, doctors, writers, journalists, leaders of scientific institutions, members of parliament, and civil society actors. We come from France, Senegal, Korea, and elsewhere. Our backgrounds are diverse. Our voices are many. But our conviction is the same: vaccination is a common good of humanity, and we will not allow anyone to call it into question.
Because vaccination is also an act of collective responsibility. By protecting themselves, each individual helps protect those who cannot be: infants too young to be vaccinated, immunocompromised individuals, and the elderly. Getting vaccinated means taking care of others as much as yourself.
This responsibility does not stop at the borders of the human species. Because 75% of emerging infectious diseases originate in animals, human and animal health are inextricably linked: vaccinating animals also protects humans. This is the essence of the "One Health" approach that we advocate.
We are signing this open letter today for all the parents who have questions, for all the citizens troubled by the surrounding noise, for all those searching for a sign of truth amidst the cacophony of opinions. And here it is: vaccination works. It is safe. It saves lives. One life every eight seconds.
We call upon healthcare professionals—doctors, pharmacists, midwives, nurses, and veterinarians—to continue to champion scientific knowledge. For patients, you are the face of trust. Every vaccination administered is an act of hope. Every explanation given is a victory over doubt. Every refutation of fallacious arguments can persuade.
In the time you have just spent reading these lines, vaccination has saved twenty-five lives. Twenty-five people who will never know. Twenty-five people who will not make the headlines. Twenty-five people who will go home tonight, embrace their loved ones, and will probably never know what they owe to a gesture invented more than two hundred years ago. That is the terrible beauty of prevention: it has no face, no name, no story. It has only numbers, and behind those numbers, the immensity of all that has not happened.
Every eight seconds, a human being escapes death thanks to a vaccine. Let's never let that counter stop.
1. Vaccines and vaccination
2. Why vaccines matter | UNICEF, for every child
3. Global vaccination efforts have saved at least 154 million lives over the past 50 years.
