Good personal hygiene is necessary to limit the risk of infection:
- Wash regularly with soap and water and dry thoroughly;
- Take special care in case of wounds or skin injuries: wash, cover, do not let macerate;
- Do not walk barefoot on the beaches and do not lie directly on the sand (risk of Larva migrans cutaneous ankylostomia, tungosis, …);
- Wearing closed shoes on muddy or wet ground (risk of strongyloidiasis, hookworm, leptospirosis, …)
- Do not walk or bathe in fresh water (risk of bilharzia, leptospirosis, …);
- Avoid excessive sun exposure and protect yourself from the sun even while swimming (shade, sunglasses, hats, long and light clothing, high UV protection sunscreen which must be reapplied regularly);
- Wear light, easily washable, breathable clothing (cotton and non-synthetic fabrics);
- Avoid leaving laundry to dry outside or on the ground (risk of myiasis), if this is not possible, iron it on both sides;
- Avoid contact with animals (risk of rabies in particular) and be especially vigilant regarding contact between animals and children.
